At least two people were shot at a high school in California on Thursday, authorities there say. The shooting occurred at Taft Union High School in Bakersfield, Calif., fire officials told NBC Los Angeles.

Emergency crews responded to the shooting just after 9 a.m. local time. According to ABC's Kero-Bakersfield affiliate, the shooter was taken into custody at around 9:20 a.m. The network said it received calls from students who were hiding in closets inside the school, located about 120 miles north of Los Angeles.

Reports indicate that one victim was airlifted to Kern Medical Center.  A second person denied medical treatment. It was not immediately clear whether they were students.

According to Reuters, a sheriff's department dispatcher said a gunman opened fire at the school, but gave no further details.

The shootings come less than a month after 26 people, including 20 children, were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history--leading to calls for reform to the country's gun laws.

On Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden with members of the National Rifle Association in Washington to discuss gun control.
