Drake celebrated Christmas Eve by posting pictures of YOLO caps and T-shirts in Walgreens and Macys and captioning the images "You gotta either chill or cut the cheque."

Although Drake put "YOLO" - You Only Live Once - in the lyrics of his 2011 track "The Motto," he hardly owns the initials or the phrase. A T-shirt company filed a trademark application nearly 20 years ago for "YOLO GEAR YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE!" and many others have used it since.

On the third season of the NBC reality show The Average Joe, in 2004, Adam Mesh launched the “You Only Live Once” (YOLO) clothing line. The following year, a San Francisco club began promoting YoloSF nights. The Strokes led off their 2006 album First Impressions of Earth with a song titled "You Only Love Once" and accompanied its single release with a marketing campaign called "Operation YOLO."
