Woman on horseback arrested for DUI

Yes, apparently you can be charged with DUI for drunken horseback riding, at least in Polk County, Florida.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that 53-year-old Donna Byrne was arrested and charged with drunk driving Thursday, while riding a horse on a public road.

A spokesman for the Polk County Sheriff's Office told the paper that Byrne smelled of alcohol and staggered when she was stopped riding a horse named Boduke on a road in Lakeland, Florida Thursday afternoon.  According to the paper a passer-by called police after seeing a woman who appeared confused riding a horse.

The spokesman, Brian Bruchey, said Byrne's blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.  She was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and animal neglect.

Boduke was taken to the County Sheriff's Animal Control livestock facility and will most likely be returned to Byrne, according to the paper“Ms. Byrne was obviously not in any condition to be on the road. She not only put herself and the horse in danger, but also anyone who was driving on the road, which is typically very busy,” Sheriff Grady Judd said.
