Dilemma: Corned Beef & Cabbage or Lent. Good News For WI

Catholics who celebrate St. Patrick’s Day might have a bit of a problem on Friday.

If you're Catholic and planning to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with the traditional Irish meal, you'll need to okay it with your local diocese, although ALL Wisconsin dioceses have granted an exception.  Corned beef and cabbage is a classic Irish dish, however, many faithful are in a predicament with St. Patty's Day falling on a Friday this year.

Faithful Catholics are not supposed to eat meat on Fridays during Lent. About half of the Roman Catholics in the U.S. were allowed to eat corned beef in celebration of the patron saint of Ireland when the day fell on a Friday in 2006.

Luckily, many bishops are already getting the word out that Friday will be an exception to the Lenten rule. Check with your church if not sure.  Read more here.
